Mitchell. CES was the first free clinic in Los Angeles for homosexuals with sexually transmitted infections (STI).

National Free Clinic Council Collection
Correspondence, bylaws, reports, contractual agreements, newsletters, memoranda, financial documents, evaluation form, articles of incorporation, and mailing lists from the San Francisco-based National Free Clinic Council (NFCC), 1970-1974. Guided by the principle that "health care is a right, not a privilege," the NFCC coordinated the disbursement of Federal grants to a nationwide urban network of free community clinics, such as the Gay Community Services Center.

The Sacramento Hepatitis B Project was initiated in 1982 to "stop and prevent the spread of Hepatitis B" by screening those at high risk for the disease (such as gay men), and immunizing those without anti-bodies to fight it.
